Jablonec nad Nisou with its population of nearly 50,000 is an administrative, entertainment, sport-and-recreation centre of the Jizerské Mountains.

Although the first written document about a settlement on the Nisa river called Jablonec dates back to as early as 1356, Jablonec did not achieve the importance of the settlements established in more fertile locations of the kingdom for the whole of the Middle Ages.
