Station 13: Museum - Eurocentre

The thirteenth station is the last stop of our tour of the city. This time we will not deal with the past but rather with the present shape of the city as the centre of Jablonec nad Nisou has recently experienced extensive transformations.

Façades of many buildings have been repaired, road surfaces reconstructed, a new pedestrian precinct built. Both the Mírové and Dolní squares have undergone significant changes. The grey-black asphalt has been replaced by cobbles. New buildings have grown, other buildings have been reconstructed, green vegetation was planted in and new objects were added to the new and reconstructed parks.

One of the implemented projects focused on the general reconstruction of the building of the Museum of Glass and Costume Jewellery between 2000 and 2004. The following stage of the city transformation included building of the Eurocentre premises on the site of the former Jablonec Exhibition Area. In 2004 and 2005, the new Business Cooperation Centre was erected and became the centre of cultural activities in the city. Its construction was co-financed by EU within the CBC Phare 2002 programme.

Starting from 2005, the general reconstruction involves also some streets and squares. The pedestrian zone will be expanded from the Church of St. Ann towards the Dolní square and the Lidická street by the Soukenná and Dvorská street. The image and use of the Dolní square also changed in 2006. This second oldest square in Jablonec was used in the last several decades mainly for public transport. In the mentioned year, the bituminous surface was replaced by natural stone cobbles, green vegetation was planted and a fountain was erected here. Reconstruction of the two last mentioned streets, of the Dolní square and of the Church of St. Ann was carried out within the project of Regeneration of the historical centre of the city of Jablonec nad Nisou, namely on the basis of the Joint Regional Operational Programme. Most of the transport was transferred from the square to other streets.

The U Muzea street interconnects the Dolní square with the Museum of Glass and Costume Jewellery. This street also underwent a general reconstruction and together with the Jiráskova street expanded the pedestrian precinct. The whole of this broader centre is closed by the Dr. Farský square with an Evangelic church. Also this square underwent reconstruction in 2006. The projects of reconstruction of the streets Ulice U Muzea, Jiráskova and the Farský square were implemented within the Phare 2003 National Programme.
